چکیده

This research studied the role of surface and cumulative word frequency in the processing and representation of morphologically complex suffixed words. Experiment 1 showed that auditory lexical decision times to suffixed words were influenced by their surface frequency. Experiments 2 and 3 showed a cumulative root frequency effect for highand low-surface-frequency suffixed words. Experiment 4 demonstrated that lexical decision times for these words varied as a function of their position in their morphological family. These results support a view whereby suffixed words belonging to a given morphological family share the same lexical entry. Within a lexical entry, suffixed words belonging to the same family are organized on the basis of their surface frequency and compete with one another. © 1999 Academic Press

Visual word recognition of morphologically complex words: effects of prime word and root frequency

The present study aims to investigate the relative role of the surface frequencies (i.e., token frequencies) in base word recognition. A masked priming experiment was carried using two types of suffixed French primes: the effects of words having a surface frequency (SF) higher than their base (e.g., cigarette – cigare) were compared with those produced by word primes having a SF lower than thei...

Effects of ageing on speed and temporal resolution of speech stimuli in older adults

Background: According to previous studies, most of the speech recognition disorders in older adults are the results of deficits in audibility and auditory temporal resolution. In this paper, the effect of ageing on timecompressed speech and auditory temporal resolution by word recognition in continuous and interrupted noise was studied. Methods: A time-compressed speech test (TCST) w...

Comparative Effect of Visual and Auditory Teaching Techniques on Retention of Word Stress patterns: A Case Study of English as a Foreign Language Curriculum in Iran

This study aimed at investigating the effect of visual (Cuisenaire Rods) and auditory nonsensical monosyllables using Pratt speech processing software as teaching techniques on retention of word stress. To this end, 60 high school participants made the two experimental groups of the study each having 30 students on the basis of their proficiency scores on KET (Key English Test). In one experime...

سایکوآکوستیک و درک گفتار در افراد مبتلا به نوروپاتی شنوایی و افراد طبیعی

Background: The main result of hearing impairment is reduction of speech perception. Patient with auditory neuropathy can hear but they can not understand. Their difficulties have been traced to timing related deficits, revealing the importance of the neural encoding of timing cues for understanding speech. Objective: In the present study psychoacoustic perception (minimal noticeable differen...

Individual differences in visual comprehension of morphological complexity

This paper explores variability in individual strategies of processing morphologically complex words. We examined the eye-movement record that 71 readers showed during reading of suffixed words (truck+er): the readers also took part in a battery of 17 skill tests, which allowed for a fine-grained characterization of their verbal abilities. Statistical analyses revealed that an individual’s abil...
